Zwei weitere Harlekinkröten-Arten für Citizen Conservation! 🐸✈️

Two more harlequin toad species for Citizen Conservation! 🐸✈️

Harlequin toads of the genus Atelopus are among the most endangered amphibian genera of all. Around 30 participants in Citizen Conservation are now looking after over 600 Rio Pescado harlequin toads (Atelopus balios), which were previously thought to be extinct.

To bring two further Atelopus species to safety, CC has now, in collaboration with Karlsruhe Zoo, imported breeding animals from our partners Centro Jambatu and Wikiri in Ecuador. In doing so, we are supporting the valuable nature and species conservation work carried out by these two outstanding organisations on the ground and establishing a conservation breeding network outside South America as a ‘backup’. At the same time, we aim to gather more information about the species, as one of them – the Limon harlequin toad – has not even been scientifically described yet.

The second species, the elegant harlequin toad (Atelopus elegans), is also critically endangered. It is already being successfully bred at Karlsruhe Zoo – and is now also being included in the CC conservation breeding programme.

The import went smoothly: all 45 animals arrived safely at Karlsruhe Zoo, where the zoo’s vet and CC advisory board member Lukas Reese gave them a thorough veterinary check-up. They will now be distributed to the first selected CC participants. And then it’s a case of keeping our fingers crossed that both species feel right at home within the CC network and produce plenty of offspring!
