Welcome to Karlsruhe Zoological Garden
The zoo as a modern Species Conservation Centre
Karlsruhe Zoological Garden is a family-friendly, green oasis in the heart of the city. It invites you to spend some time here, relax and do some animal watching. However, the zoo is so much more. It stands for species conservation in our day-by-day activities, research and education. We participate in numerous European and international conservation breeding programmes, thereby creating captive reserve populations for animal species that are sometimes highly endangered out in the wild. In addition, we support many projects for the preservation of biodiversity in the areas of origin – both on our doorstep and worldwide – through our Species Protection Foundation Zoo Karlsruhe.
In addition to taking a break from the daily hustle and bustle that we can offer our zoo guests, we impart knowledge about animals and their natural habitats. We explain why species are threatened and what can be done about it. At the same time, we cooperate closely with colleges and universities, participate in basic research as well as in the development of creative ideas around nature.
The Karlsruhe Zoological Garden looks back at a long tradition, but always also looks to the future in terms of animal husbandry standards. As an inner-city zoo limited by space, we can constantly improve animal welfare with unconventional solutions. Experience the green oasis with around 6,500 animals and more than 340 species. We look forward to your visit!
